Racing

Yacht racing takes place at weekends throughout the year and during the week in the Summer. We have an excellent reputation for organising both fun races for all, National Championship races and "open" regattas for sailors from both home and abroad.

The races are held close to the harbour with starts in full view of the clubhouse. Both bay races (known as round the buoys/cans) and offshore races cater for all types of sailing enthusiast.

The Club's main racing handicap system is determined by the IRC (CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION), this is to ensure that different designs of boat can compete on level terms, so the skill of the crew determines the result of a race.

The Club also has its own Handicap System, this is to encourage the less experienced to participate and compete against other boats. This System also incorporates a capability to have pursuit races (commonly raced midweek in the summer); in this type of race a boat's handicap throughout the season is adjusted depending on its performance; this allows for differing crew ability but yet still maintain competitive and fun sailing, similar to a golf handicap.

The promotion of racing within the club provides friendly rivalry and helps hone sailing skills for all crew members. Prizes and trophies are awarded for results in a series of races or for one off events.

Bar and catering facilities are often available before and after racing allowing crews to share their experiences.

Race dates and times are determined by the tides as Scarborough harbour does not allow boats to be afloat 100% of the time.

Detailed information on race programmes, safety requirements and race results are found in the Racing & Events part of this website.
